The second edition of Un PO di SPORT, an itinerant event to promote sport and culture, opened on 20 May with the “Running e non Solo” (Running and Beyond) convention dedicated to health and healthy lifestyles. It was hosted by the renowned cardiologist Massimo Gualerzi and Luca Righetti, a champion snowboarder who represented Italy at the Sochi 2014 Winter Paralympics.
It’s set to be an entire summer brimming with sport, wellness and fun, one which will involve nine municipalities from three different Italian provinces on the shores of the wonderful Po River.
The Un PO di SPORT initiative arose from the collaborative efforts of able-bodied athletes, associations for social communications and promotion of differently-abled sport activities, the public administrations of the cities involved, institutions, sports entities, local associations and private businesses. They all joined forces to find the best purpose for sport and to give life to moments of gathering, wellness and mutual exchange.
They all share a desire to provide information and an ethical education, create solidarity and to make the banks of the River Po accessible and fully enjoyable once again as places to spend time together, for integration and for sustainable tourism.
The formula is well-established by now: numerous municipalities put themselves to the test on pitches, setting aside their ideologies and rivalries. Everyone can sign up and everyone can participate.
Join us and rediscover the beauty of these places through sport and games!
SPORT, CULTURE, WINE AND FOOD
Eight stops dedicated to numerous sporting disciplines and excursions and guided tours in nature reserves and historic locations. Everyone – children and adults, differently-abled, amateurs or professional athletes, curious or sceptical – is invited to participate in a new way to have fun and compete. The activities involved are numerous: running, beach volley, rugby, beach soccer, rowing, water skiing, mountain biking, archery, martial arts, sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball just to name a few.
There’s space for any and all interests, with numerous initiatives dedicated to food and wine and the promotion of local products. Guests will have the chance to taste the culinary excellence offered by the involved municipalities through dinners, cooking shows and markets: “anolino morbino” (a small ravioli with cheese and mountain herbs) from Mezzani, “spalla cruda” (a type of cured ham) from Palasone Sissa, “spalla cotta” (a type of cooked cured ham) from San Secondo, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Lambrusco wine from Torrile, “erbazzone” (a savoury tart) from Guastalla and pumpkin tortelli pasta from Casalmaggiore.
All served with a necessary condiment: live music and dj sets!
A river without borders
A common thread unites the various days of this sporting event: at each step, one of the games offered will be played as a match between the participating municipalities, inspired by Games without Frontiers.
All the towns involved in the project can participate in a dedicated sports competition with a team or individual player and, should they win, add the point to the ranking for the municipality represented, with a lot of wild cards to be played.
At the last stop, the winning municipality will be awarded with a prestigious recognition: the most sporting municipality of 2016.
